Public meeting calendars should work with the ordinary calendar software we use to manage our time
Problem: when we publish public meetings as web pages (HTML) and Adobe files (PDF) we create barriers to civic engagement because these formats do not work with ordinary calendar software that so many of us use to manage our time.
Solution: publish public meeting calendars as standard calendar files (ICS)
Benefit: when we publish meetings in a standard calendar format we can add meetings to our personal calendars, set meeting reminders, and invite people to meetings. We can also make calendars work with other things, like Alexa Flash Briefings.
Cost: negligible. The City Clerk ought to keep public meetings in calendar software already. How else do they keep track? If not, a public meetings calendar file is easy to create and maintain. We know, because we do it.
